New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became nomadic, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period.
Why did you decide to become an author?
I’ve always written, since I started my first novel in the fourth grade. I made it to page 70 on my wide-ruled spiral notebook before I stopped. I continued to write in high school and attempted several novels in my twenties before life got in the way of writing. I rediscovered my love of writing when I started my blog There’s Always Room for One More. In the fall of 2009, I realized I wasn’t getting any younger and it was now or never, so I participated in NaNoWriMo. I was off and running!
