Violet By Sabrina Simon

Violet is a series of poems and prose, spanning the author’s journey from 2015 till now. All the poems have a heartfelt touch and have a teenage appeal to them. Sabrina has poured her heart into these poems and expresses several problems she faced in life. Taking inspiration from Kendrick Lamar, Sabrina pens down her deep-felt feelings through these poems. This collection of 50 poems feels like Sabrina’s internal monologue and her unexpressed feelings for her lover. Each poem has a specific message which gives a glimpse of the author’s emotional state. The nuances are so beautifully presented that they resonate with everyone who has experienced the charisma of teenage love.

Each poem has a different tone and a different message for Sabrina’s beloved. The poems hit the chords of a hopeless romantic, who is madly in love. As we move to the next poem the complexity of the author’s emotion also gets complicated. The madness of love, fear of dejection, and brewing romance, Sabrina touches all different notes of love. For some people, it perhaps feels too personal or a sneak into someone’s love letters. The poems paint a picture of a love affair set in a fantasy land. After her hiatus in 2019, the quality and dedication that goes into writing exquisite poetry have not diminished even a bit. I am enthralled by Sabrina’s grasp of words and her proficiency in the English language.

Unlike, the common notion that poetry has to be complex in order to justify its beauty. Sabrina takes a different route and has written all her poetry in a simplistic fashion that gives a calming effect to the reader. The poetic pieces written lately in 2021 and 2022 cover my favorites from the lot. The reason being, the maturity and sense of assurance that took over Sabrina. It is clearly reflected in her writing and how far she has come in her emotional journey.  Even the pieces that talk about emotional turmoil, has my heart. Sabrina so beautifully enchants the reader with the enigma of her words describing the sentimentality of the human mind. I felt so involved by the end that I recommended this book to half of my social circle. Each emotion has been captured so magnificently through words.

The emotional depth with which all the poems and prose have been written is rarely seen among today’s poets. The poems are an excellent ode to all the hopeless romantics out there. This book makes a wonderful playlist of love that can be gifted to anyone we have a crush on, our spouse, or our date. The sentiments expressed in these poems reach out to everyone who has ever fallen in love or is currently in love. Poetry is generally known to express a lot in a few words. Sabrina shows how this can be done to express emotions. This collection of 50 poems will always have a special place in my heart. Needless to say, a poetic gem that strikes the chords of hopeless romanticism and love.
